It’s been a busy summer so far and I’ve not had a lot of time to check in our Rebel alumni who are playing pro ball! I had an extra hour or two this afternoon, so I did just that! I will try and find more time in the next few weeks to do an update on Independent League players also!
We currently have 9 players active in the MLB farm system. We started the season with 10, so we’ve got both good and bad reports to relay! Let’s go!
Jimmy Kerrigan played for the Rebels back in 2014, coming to us from Temple University and later playing for Virginia Commonwealth. He spent some time in the Independant Leagues and later signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Twins in 2017. He started out the 2021 season with the Double-A Witchita Wind Surge, and is currently playing for the AAA St. Paul Saints. He is batting .205 for the Saints and has 9 extra base hits including 5 home runs!
Jacob Rhinesmith was a member of the 2017 Rebel squad, joining us from Western Kentucky. He was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2018. He is currently playing for the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks where he is batting .240 with 4 home runs!
Brendan Donovan was with the Rebels for the 2016 season, coming from South Alabama. He was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2018 draft, and started the 2021 season with High-A Peoria. He moved up to Double-AA Springfield on June 8th and is currently batting .303!
Garrett Kelly pitched for the 2014 Rebel team where he joined us from from Wake Forest. He signed with the Twins back in 2016, was released and then signed with the Chicago Cubs in 2018. He is still in the Cubs farm system, starting this season with High-A South Bend, and moving the Double-A Tennessee at the end of May. He is currently pitching in relief for the Smokies and holds an 8.10 ERA over 10 innings pitched.
Chandler Raiden played for the 2017 Rebels, traveling to New Market from Florida International University. Chandler was signed as a free agent by Tampa Bay in 2018, and was scheduled to start the cancelled 2020 season with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits. Unfortunately the Rays organization has since released him. If our baseball radar sees him pop up anywhere else, we’ll keep you posted!
Justin Crump was a part of the 2016 Rebel team, coming to us from UNC Wilmington. He was drafted in 2019 by the San Francisco Giants. He is starting off the 2021 season with the San Jose Giants, which is their Low-A affiliate. Justin has appeared in relief in 13 games so far this season and holds a 4.82 ERA with 3 holds, 1 save and 27 strikeouts!
Reeves Martin was a member of the 2018 Championship Rebel team, joining us from New Orleans University. Reeves was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2019 and began his 2021 season with AAA-Tacoma. He appeared in 5 games, but retired at the end of May. Wishing him the best of luck!
Jake Washer was part of the Rebel Organization for the 2017 season, joining us from Eastern Carolina. He was drafted by the Cubs in 2019 and is currently with their High-A affiliate in South Bend, IN. He has appeared in 23 games this season and is currently batting .190.
Brandon Parker was with the New Market Rebels for part of our 2018 season, coming to us from Mississippi Gulf Coast JC. Brandon was drafted in 2019 by the Atlanta Braves and so far has spent his 2021 season with Low-A Augusta. He is batting .171, and so far has hit 5 home runs. Unfortunately he was added to the 7-day Disabled list on June 26th, so hopefully he makes his way back soon!
Jacinto Arredondo was a unique and memorable pitcher on our 2018 Championship team, coming to us from Tampa. He signed with the Red Sox for the cancelled 2020 season, and is just now beginning his pro career with the Low-A Salem Red Sox here in Virginia. So far Cinto has thrown 19.1 innings over 12 games and is holding a 3.86 ERA with 18 strikeouts. He’s currently the alum playing closest to New Market, so it’d be a fun, quick trip to go see him play!
Brandon “Cotton” Dickson is both our oldest and most recent signee to a minor league contract. Cotton was part of the memorable 2006 Rebels, joining us from Tusculum College. Cotton signed with the St. Louis Cardinals all the way back in 2010 and worked his way through their minor league system until he ultimately joined the Big League squad for several games in 2011. He was released in 2012, but went on to play successfully for almost a decade in Japan. He was invited to join the Olympic Team USA in May and then signed once again with the St. Louis Cardinals on June 14th! From what I understand, if he does not join the 40-Man Cardinals roster, he will remain on the Team USA roster. So far he has pitched 3.2 innings in 4 games with the AAA-Redbirds and holds a 7.36 ERA. Wishing Cotton the very best in his continued career!
