Rebels Roundup – Game Logs

June 23rd

The New Market Rebels traveled to Winchester Friday night to take on the second-place Royals in Valley League action. The Rebels had three consecutive days of rain-outs, and Winchester had two, leading up to the contest. There was no rain at Kevin Anderson field Friday night.
It was a pitchers’ duel early. The visiting Rebels scored in the first as Bryce Safferwich (FL State) opened the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Trenton Bullen’s (Central FL) 4-3 groundout. After that, it was scoreless through the sixth. Rebels starter Mark Hindy (W&M) worked 5.1 innings, was touched for two hits, struck out five, and walked two and got the win to improve to 2-0.
A squad of New Market relief pitchers followed Hindy to keep Winchester off the scoreboard – Jacob Petersheim (CO State-Pueblo) in his inaugural Valley League appearance), Luke Drzemiecki (Goldey-Beacom), Austin Ritchie (Shepherd U.), Anthony Pass (W&J), and El Rico Riley (FL Southern).

The Rebels turned the offensive switch back to “on” in the seventh.
Riley opened the frame with single to left and stole second. Two outs later DH Luke Smith (W&M) drove Riley across the dish with a single to center.
New Market added an insurance run in the eighth. Safferwich drew a one-out walk. After the second out, Bullen drew a free pass and Riley drove in Safferwich with the Rebels’ third run.
The Royals offense came alive in the late innings. Winchester opened the seventh with a walk drawn by Danny Baez (Indian River), followed by David Stokely (UND) being hit by a pitch. Chad Ballenger (Alderson Broaddus) hit a single to shallow left field to load the bases.
Ritchie then struck out Evan Smith (WVU) and Jancarlos Colon (Del. St), and got Jack Hay (AL St.) to ground out to first, to quell the uprising.
Winchester made more noise in the eighth as Camden Jackson (NC A&T) opened the frame with a single to right. One out later Tyler Cox (Eckerd) hit a roller down the third base line that hugged the grass and dirt just to the right of the base line, then jumped over bag into foul ground and kept rolling for an eventual double, advancing Jackson to third.
The threat was quashed as Pass struck out Baez and got Stokely on a pop-out.
Riley made key contributions to the Rebels win at the plate and on the mound, going 3-for-4 in the batter’s box, with an RBI and a run scored. Riley’s first inning double was New Market’s only extra-base hit.
On the mound, Riley was the closer, working a three-out ninth, and should have been credited with his third save.
Smith was the only other Rebel with a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Royals’ lone multiple-hit performance was Cox’s 2-for-4 outing, including a double, Winchester’s only extra-base hit.
It was the Rebels’ second shutout of the season as they regained the .500 mark at 8-8. The Royals are now 10-7.
The win gives New Market a 2-0 edge in the four-game season series versus Winchester. Riley also got the save in game one of the series, a 5-3 Rebels win on June 9th.

June 24th

One day after shutting out the Winchester Royals, the New Market Rebels had seven shutout innings put on them, and scored their lone run on Cole Bullen’s (Central FL) fifth inning homerun, in the  Purcellville Cannons’ 11-1, eight-inning mercy rule shortened win, Saturday night at Rebel Park.  Chayce Bryant (Southeastern) started the game, Shohei Ohtani style, as DH and pitcher. Bryant put in  two inconsequential innings on the mound and was 1-for-4 at the plate, the “one” being a two-RBI double  in third.

Purcellville scored three in the third and sixth innings then busted the game open with a five-run eighth as they batted around, accumulating five runs on three hits, three walks and a hit batsman.   Austin Eppley (Central FL) bashed an RBI double to center, plating Justin Acal (Pittsburgh) to start the  scoring.

Keegan Knutson (San Jacinto North) earned an RBI (Eppley) when he was hit-by-pitch and Brandan Roney (FIU) drew an RBI walk, pushing Mikey Brinton (AR-Ft. Smith) across the dish.   Tristan McAlister (Mt. St. Mary’s) wrapped up the scoring with a single, driving in Bryant and Knutson.  The Cannons got big production from the 7th, 8th, and 9th slots in the order.

Knutson went 2-for-3 with 2 runs, Roney contributed 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run, and nine-hole batter McAlister contributed a 2-for-4 with 3 RBI outing, totaling 7-for-10, 7 RBI, and 3 runs for the bottom of the  lineup.

Ryan Guida’s (FIU) 2-for-3, one run, was the Cannons’ only other multiple hit outing, and he raised his  batting average to .442, in first-place tie with Gregory Melo (Tallahassee CC) of Covington.   Purcellville reliever Austin King (San Jacinto North) worked 3 innings, yielding 3 hits, issued no walks and struck out 1, to earn the win (2-0).

Four of the Rebels’ five hits were for extra-bases – Bullen’s homer, and doubles by Bryce Suters (unc),  Carlos Irizarry (Penn State-Harrisburg), and Sean Stewart (Calhoun CC).

New Market starter Matt Seibert (Millersville) worked 4.1 innings, gave up eight hits, five runs (all earned), walked four and struck out two. Seibert was charged with the loss, making his record 0-1.   The Rebels turned two double plays, a conventional 5-3 (Bryce Safferwich (FL Southern) to Bullen) in  the sixth, and Bullen, unassisted, in the seventh, with a nifty leap to glove McAllister’s line drive, then a swipe-tag of Roney off first.

The Cannons successfully executed two double steals, both by Knutson and Roney, in the second and fifth innings, where both scored in the three-run frame.

New Market dropped from a one-game visit to the .500 mark to be 8-9, in eighth place.  Purcellville improved to 10-8, in a fourth place tie with Front Royal.

The Rebels continue to operate with a reduced roster of 28 players, while the Cannons have the maximum 35 on board.

Rebels in Pro Ball Addendum

While it’s easy to miss names in the great mix that is professional baseball, I missed one name simple thanks to a clerical oversight on my own part.. so a quick update on Jack Hartman!

Jack Hartman was an infielder on the 2017 Rebels, but went on to pitch in his college career and then his professional career. He was drafted in the 11th round of the 2020 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, spent a short time with them and then sat out all of 2021 recovering from Tommy John surgery. When he was healthy again, the Pirates traded him to Tampa Bay and he is now pitching for the Single-A Charleston River Dogs. He has appeared in 21 games so far this season and currently holds a 5.92 ERA. We wish Jack continued health and success as he works away in the minor leagues!

Checking in on Rebel alumni playing Pro Ball

Normally I do a run down of our former players playing professional baseball before the Valley League season starts, but I was running behind this year! Since last year, we have had several players retire, get released or move on to other things from professional baseball. There are so many leagues, teams and moving parts, it’s pretty hard to keep track of everyone but I try as best I can! Once a player comes to New Market they become a part of the Rebel family, and we want to know where they go after they leave because they become a valued part of our lives! It’s always such a joy to see our players have continued success after their time with the Rebels!

This post will be a quick rundown of which players we currently have playing in professional baseball and a very brief recap of where they’ve been and how they’re doing. If any readers out there know of any Rebel alumni I have missed on the list, please comment or reach out to let me know!

I’ll start with the Rebels in Major League Baseball and make my way through the minors and Independent League players!

Brendan Donovan played for the Rebels in 2016, and had his first successful Major League season last year with the St. Louis Cardinals. He finished 2022 with a Gold Glove, and Rookie of the Year buzz. The Rebel family is very proud! He continues to do this season, and we’re having fun watching!

Reed Garrett pitched for the Rebels in 2013, and has had a successful career between the minors, Japan and Major League Baseball. He has currently just been called up to play in the Majors once more for the Baltimore Orioles. He has been pitching well so far this season in Triple-A Norfolk, and we look forward to seeing what he does in Baltimore!

Chad Kuhl played for the Rebels in 2012, and is currently on the roster for the Washington Nationals. He has also played for the Colorado Rockies and the Pittsburg Pirates, and has certainly had some success playing in Major League Baseball. Chad has had a little bit of a rough start this season with a little time on the DL, but he’s moved to the bullpen and we hope he’ll do well there! It is fun having a former Rebel playing for our closest MLB teams, and I hope some Rebel fans get the chance to see him play in DC!

Jonathan Bowlan pitched for the Rebels in 2016, and is probably our highest draft pick ever, going in the second round of the 2018 draft to the KC Royals. He has been working away in the Royals farm system since that time and has spent most of the 2023 season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. As of yesterday June 20th, he has been called up to Triple-A Omaha, so we hope he can keep climbing his way up and having success on the mound!

Jake Washer was a catcher for the 2017 Rebels, and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 29th round of the 2019 draft. Like Bowlan, he has been working his way up the minor league ladder, and is also currently with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He was recently placed on the “development list”, which was a new thing for me to learn about, but hopefully he’ll be back in action soon behind the plate!

Brandon Parker was a member of our 2018 Rebels. He signed with the Atlanta Braves in 2019. He is currently playing for the High-A affiliate Rome Braves and is currently batting .174 with 2 home runs. We wish him the best in continuing his professional career!

Justin King was another member of our 2018 Championship squad. Though he was a hitter for the Rebels, he has continued his career as a pitcher. Justin has spent time in the minor league system as well as some time playing in Australia. He was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers last year, and is currently with their High-A affiliate Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, though he was recently placed on the Disabled List. We hope he’s healthy soon and continue to have success in professional baseball!

Jackson Lancaster was a member of the 2021 Rebels, and he both pitched and hit for our team successfully! He is the most recent Rebel alum to have gotten an MLB opportunity, signing this spring with the Tampa Bay Rays after having a successful season in 2022 with the Independent Ogden Raptors in the Pioneer League. He is currently with the Rookie level FCL Rays where he has pitched well in 4 appearances. We truly hope he continues to do well and have success on the mound!

Jimmy Kerrigan was an outfielder on the 2014 Rebels. Jimmy began his pro career in Independent ball, but got an opportunity with the Minnesota Twins in 2017. He was with the Twins, and worked his way up to Triple-A in their farm system before being released and moving on to the Kane County Cougars in the American Association of Professional Baseball. He is in his second season with the Cougars and has done well with them. He is currently batting .260 with 4 HR and 18 RBI. We wish him all the best in his baseball journey!

Jacob Rhinesmith was a member of the 2017 Rebels, and is another outfielder who has spent time with both MLB-affiliated and Independent teams. Jacob was drafted in 2018 by the Washington Nationals and played in their farm system up until last season. This season he is with the York Revolution in the Atlantic League. He is having a good season so far, batting .268 with 4 home runs and 25 RBI. We hope it gets even better!

Oraj Anu was an impactful hitter on our 2018 Championship team. Despite being drafted multiple times, Oraj never signed with an MLB affiliate. He completed his college career at the University of Kentucky and has taken advantage of Independent League opportunities. He is currently playing for the Sussex County Miners in the Frontier League and is batting .314 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI!

Alec Aleywine was a first baseman and pitcher for the 2017 Rebels. I lost track of him after his time in New Market, but he resurfaced again recently as a player for the Trinidad Triggers in the Pecos League out west. He also appears to be doing dual duty for the Triggers having started three games as a pitcher, and receiving 29 at bats over 11 games. He also seems to be having success in both roles holding a batting average above .300 with 3 home runs, 13 RBI and an ERA of 4 with 20 strikeouts! It’s a shame the Pecos league is so far away, because it looks like it would be fun to watch Alec on the field again!
