Over the past two days, Major League Baseball conducted their First Year Players Draft in shortened format. They reduced the draft to only 5 rounds from the traditional 40 rounds due to funding and the COVID 19 pandemic. In the past we’ve only had a handful of New Market Rebels chosen in the top five rounds, and this year we had one!
Jack Hartman 2017
This year, 2017 Rebel Jack Hartman was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 4th round. Though he played at Tallahassee State and for the Rebels as an infielder, he went on to pitch predominately in relief at the College of Central Florida and Appalachian State University. Jack is the second 2017 Rebel to be selected by the Pirates, the first being Jake Washer. He is the sixth overall from the 2017 team to get a shot in the pros, joining Keven Pimentel, Chandler Raiden, Nathan Pawelczyk, and Jacob Rhinesmith.
The New Market Rebels are thrilled for Jack, and we wish him the best of luck in his professional career!
New Market Rebels first-year head coach Arthur Stenberg IV has added three assistant coaches to complete the Rebel’s staff roster.
“I am pleased to have these three talented and focused guys join me for the Rebels 2020 campaign,” Stenberg said. “With these coaches, and the players roster we have nearly completed, I am confident the Rebels will play at a competitive level and make postseason run.”
Colton Taylor
Assistant Coach Colton Taylor, in his second stint coaching under Stenberg, will serve as the hitting and infield coach for the Rebels
Taylor is from Tahoka, TX, and played his freshman year at McPherson College in McPherson, KS, then transferred to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM where he played baseball and earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. Taylor is currently pursuing an MBA at University of The Southwest.
Taylor began his coaching career in Lindsborg, KS at Bethany College where he primarily worked with the outfield, while assisting with infield and hitting.
In the summer of 2019, Taylor was hired by Stenberg as the infield coach of the Niagara Power of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, where he coached over 15 Division 1 players and helped lead the team to a 34-12 record and a the New York College Baseball League championship.
Logan Colvin
Logan Colvin is slotted as the Rebel’s pitching coach under Stenberg.
Colvin has five years of coaching experience; two years at Demopolis High School and three years at Russell County High School in Seale, AL, where he is assistant/pitching coach.
With Colvin’s help Demopolis and Russell County have had many successes including: a 122-33 overall record, the number one and two pitchers for strikeouts in Alabama during 2018, and the number one pitcher for strikeouts in 2019.
Russell County achieved the number one ranking in class 6A for Alabama during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, many collegiate baseball signees, and one player selected in the Major League Baseball draft in 2018.
Colvin is a 2012 graduate of Snead State Community College and a 2015 graduate of the University of West Alabama, majoring in Social Science Education. He played collegiately for four years at Snead State and West Alabama, and recently earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Troy University.
Trevor Tunison
Trevor Tunison, of Rockford, IL, will be Stenberg’s third assistant coach, and will focus on catching and assist with hitting.
Tunison is finishing his second season as a graduate assistant, working with catchers and hitters, for the Lewis University Flyers and brings four years of collegiate playing experience – two seasons each at Madison College and Lewis University.
As a player, Tunison helped lead the Madison College Wolfpack to their 8th straight NJCAA World Series appearance in the 2015 season. After his days as a player, he immediately went into coaching.
Tunison has a BS in Marketing and a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Lewis University
The Rebels went 19-23 in 2019, in third place in the North Division and exited the play-offs 0-2 versus second place Woodstock in the division semi-final round.
“Seeing the resumes of these assistant coaches, and monitoring our roster development, affirms our confidence in Head Coach Stenberg and our coaching crew’s ability to lead the Rebels to a successful season by giving our players ample opportunities to further develop their skills in pursuit of their baseball dreams,” Rebels President and General Manager Bruce Alger said.
Since our last pro update, we’ve had two additional Rebel alumni sign professional contracts with Independent League organizations! Both players were part of our 2018 Championship pitching squad.
Trevin Eubanks, pitching in our 2018 Championship game.
You’ll remember Trevin Eubanks as the righty relief pitcher out of Valdosta State and Niceville, FL. He held a 1.5 ERA throughout the Rebels season, and was a key part of our 2018 pitching staff. This week Trevin signed with the Shaumburg Boomers of Shaumburg, IL. They are a member of the Frontier League which has it’s teams located primarily in the midwest. We’re excited to see what Trevin does for the Boomers and we wish him the best of luck in his career!
Anthony Trovato, 2018
Anthony Trovato was also a right-handed pitcher for the 2018 team and came to the Rebels from Rollins College and Cummins, GA. Anthony Trovato recently signed with the Westside Woolly Mammoths of the United Shore Professional League, which is located in Detroit, Michigan. He has pitched in 4 innings there so far and currently holds a 6.75 ERA. We wish Anthony the best of luck moving forward in his baseball career!
